2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness
As a midsize crossover with a wagon history, the Subaru Outback combines cargo-carrying utility with car-like comfort and drivability. Plus, with attributes like tall ground clearance, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and Subaru X-MODE®, it delivers real off-road capability, especially in the Wilderness variant. Here's a quick look at the highlights of this adventure-ready trim level.
What's New for 2026?
Launching late in 2025, the 2026 Subaru Outback kicks off the model's seventh generation. The all-new Outback sports a bolder exterior aesthetic with a more squared-off front end, a prominent grille, and narrowed headlights. There's also a new 12.1-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that are standard across the lineup. Other changes include more interior space and refinement, a smoother ride, and a hands-free highway driving feature.

Subaru Outback Wilderness Performance and Capability
The Subaru Outback Wilderness is propelled by a potent 2.4-liter turbocharged Subaru BOXER® engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive enables surefooted handling on or off the road, while the dual-function X-MODE® traction management system provides better grip on loose or slippery surfaces.
While all Subaru Outback trims can take you beyond the asphalt, the Wilderness takes your all-terrain prospects to the next level with attributes like:
- Terrain-tuned suspension with 9.5 inches of ground clearance and increased approach/departure angles
- Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires
- Low Speed / Low Ratio Gradient Control
- Revised final drive ratio and stronger differential for improved climbing capability
Subaru Outback Wilderness Interior and Utility
The Subaru Outback is spacious and accommodating. It offers ample passenger space, nicely cushioned and supportive features, modern styling, and quality materials like StarTex® water-repellant upholstery and anodized copper-finish accents. The cargo area measures 34.6 cubic feet behind the second row (2.0 cubic feet more than 2025), expanding to more than 75 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The reinforced roof rails can carry larger gear that doesn't fit inside - up to 220 pounds while moving and 700 pounds when stationary. They're also great for a rooftop tent. Notable amenities include:
- 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel
- Heated mirrors
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat
- Heated front and rear seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Hands-free liftgate
- 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system
- Subaru EyeSight® Drive Aids
